| After I graduated from university, I spent the summer drawing my first full length comic book, assuming that if I just showed it to an editor, I would immediately be hired. I was (and still am) way into Blade of the Immortal, by Hiroaki Samura. I wanted to emulate his incredibly life-like and cinematic style, but with a modern, Asian American storyline, and this was the result. It makes me laugh now, partly because of my naive conviction that it would jumpstart my career, and partly because of how big a role the idea of being Asian American played in my creative output at the time. I took it to a comic book convention and some guys tore it apart, and that was that. |
